A place to hang my hat

Hello and welcome!

This is a blog related to crochet and my creations. My business name is SlayCrochetAndCrafts. I can be found on Facebook, Etsy, Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok with the same name. For other links check my Linktr.ee!

I love those platforms, but also wanted space to offer news, write some thoughts, feature some Etsy listings that I like, posting encouragement, other things I'm involved in, keep track of free patterns I like, and to share some free patterns by myself... and that will be THIS space. Lately I've been trying a lot of new things in the crochet world and I'm just loving it. I've been crocheting for about 15 years, but just this year starting venturing out of my comfort zone. How liberating!

I'm most active on TikTok, where I also post some life stuff :) see you there!

Want to get started crocheting? I think the best first project is a cotton washcloth. Even if it's not perfect, it'll be functional and give you a wonderful chance to practice slipknots, chains, and single crochet. I have made myself many washcloths and they outlast the store bought scrubbies and cloths, but aren't as damaging. If you have access to a Walmart or craft store you'll probably have access to affordable cotton yarn (Lily Sugar N Cream, or Peaches N Cream yarn). It is not the best yarn available, but it's affordable and makes durable and pretty washcloths that'll last you a long time. This yarn is also suitable for hot pads (do not use acrylic for projects that must take heat.)

There are some tools you'll want first.

There are many different crochet hooks available. This is the exact set that I personally use. I really love the silicone grippers, combined with the strength of metal hooks. I'm totally guilty of breaking a plastic hook. I also have bamboo, but there can be imperfections that snag yarn so I recommend the metal Boye hooks instead. As you expand your skills you will likely collect a lot of different hooks!

I keep my hooks, measuring tape, and scissors in a small zipping bag, like a pencil bag or cosmetic bag.

Cute Cottagecore Crochet Pattern Roundup #2

Pattern Roundup #2 I have a special love for cottagecore, gardening, and herbs.. and it feels so rewarding to combine my crochet interests with a cottage aesthetic. Here are fun cottagecore themed crochet patterns from Etsy! Wearables 1.  This is a beautiful Fern Scarf to drape around your shoulders as you inspire both fear and awe in your neighborhood 2.  The fairytale bonnet really looks like something you'd put on to enjoy a walk in the woods looking for fairy rings. This maker is one of my favorites. 3.  This sweet bucket hat style mushroom cap is so dreamy with that little bit of whimsical "ribboning effect" that reminds me of mushroom gills. Use caution, though, as the pattern maker is restricting this to personal usage.  4.   the Elwyn Hood looks cute and cozy, but also like you might be an herbal witch living in a cave. It has all the vibes.  5.   The Foxglove bucket hat is another one from The Entangled Fae, and I just find...
