When I lived in the Midwest I was part of a fiber art gathering that donated newborn hats to the local hospital, so that new parents could take their babies home in unique hats.
I enjoy charity and they are quick makes.
Some hospitals won't use handmade hats, and some require natural fibers only (even though the clothing and blankets they use are not natural fibers) so it's best to ask before creating hats to donate.
Today I made an easy pattern to share.
Important Info: For my example I'm using G hook, and category 4 Red Heart super saver yarn. I made 24 foundation half double crochet, but you will use a multiple of 4 that fits the length of hat you're creating. (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, etc.) I recommend a relaxed tension for more stretch.
Abbreviations:
Ch=chain
Hdc=half double crochet
Fhdc=foundation half double crochet
Fp-hdc=front post half double crochet
Bp-hdc=back post half double crochet
*=repeat pattern begins
Row 1: 24 fhdc. Ch 2, turn. (Ch2 is treated as a hdc throughout.)
Row 2: hdc, fp-hdc. *3hdc, fp-hdc. Repeat from * to end, last stitch will be a hdc. Ch2, turn.
Row 3: *Bp-hdc, 3hdc. Repeat until end. The bp-hdc will be made on top of the previous row's fp-hdc. Ch2, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until desired circumference is met.
Match up the sides, sew closed to make a cylinder shape, and then cinch the top to finish the hat. Tie off, weave in ends. Add a pompom if desired.
